ARCATA, CA 95521 *Includes shipping and any required state taxes •PLEASE READ THESE INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY• Before you begin any search for an area code or “Time THERE,” you must be sure that you... 1. Make a copy of this disk to use as your working copy and put the locked original in safe storage. 2. Enter your OWN AREA CODE (U.S. or Canadian only) as requested when you click on the “PERSONALIZE” button. 3. Make sure the stack is not locked; you need to run the stack from an unlocked disk. Note also that if you attempt to run it under 2.0 or 2.1 – without converting it – it will be locked and won't function properly since this stack was designed for use in HyperCard 1.2 but is convertible to both 2.0 and 2.1. To convert the stack to HyperCard 2.0/2.1, open the stack from your 2.0 or 2.1 version, and select CONVERT STACK under the FILE menu. After conversion you will be able to add cities and make other personal alterations. Please note that if this stack is converted to 2.0/2.1 it is then NOT convertible BACK to 1.2. If you wish to keep it in BOTH versions, please make a copy before converting. 4. Check to see that your computer’s clock is accurately set! As you know, you can check/adjust your clock by clicking on the GENERAL submenu of your CONTROL PANEL located under the Apple Menu. When the time shown is correct, you will find that that time will show up on each card in the “Time HERE” box; the “Time THERE” will show you the most accurate current time for that city or country that can be determined – with exceptions as noted below. •HINTS FOR MAKING QUICK AND EFFICIENT SEARCHES• Since many city names are duplicated (or even partially duplicated) throughout the world, it is best to enter AT LEAST THE FIRST THREE LETTERS of BOTH the CITY AND STATE or CITY AND COUNTRY names separated by a SPACE at the FIND request. Then press either the RETURN or the ENTER key to begin search. In most, but not all, cases, the chosen city will appear if it is contained in the listing. IF IT DOES NOT, simply press the RETURN or ENTER key AGAIN for further searching. At times you will find duplications that are a bit confusing such as asking to find Bangor, Maine by typing "FIND Ban Mai" only to be taken to the card showing Bangkok, Thailand! Though the "Mai" is not found in the country name, it IS part of the name of another city in the same city field... Chieng MAI! Fortunately, this type of duplication is rare and can be overcome by adding more letters to the FIND command or searching for the next card that has those combinations of letters in any of its fields. If you are returned to the SAME card WITHOUT finding the city or country you are seeking, you may ADD the name simply by typing it in the fields on the appropriate card. This feature is especially useful if you are seeking cities or countries you contact frequently, but that have not been included. (Call your long distance operator if you need to check for the correct area code for that city or country.) For other efficient search techniques, such as seeking "whole words," please refer to your HyperCard manuals. DIALING INSTRUCTIONS To direct dial a city outside your dialing area in the U.S. or Canada, dial 1 + Area Code + Number To direct dial listed INTERNATIONAL cities from the U.S. and Canada, dial 011 + Country Code + City Code accompanying the name of the city. The “AreaCODE&TIMEfinder” is preset to change to ADVANCED TIME (Daylight Saving) for the UNITED STATES, CANADA and all other countries AUTOMATICALLY! It changes for the UNITED STATES and CANADA on the first Sunday of April and reverts back to Standard Time on the last Sunday in October. You need do nothing to cause the changeover except make the change of the current time on your computer clock as you will want to do in any case. Most European countries also observe Advanced Time during the summer months and the program changes for those, too. However, those adjustments are calculated in this stack for the season that the United States and Canada observe Advanced Time. There are short periods of time when the U.S./Canadian Advanced Time “seasons” do not match those of other countries, so you may wish to check with your International operator during the brief periods between the last days of March and the first Sunday of April, and again from near the end of September through October. For instance, most WESTERN EUROPEAN countries observe Advanced Time from March 25 to September 29. The United Kingdom begins on March 25, but continues until the last Sunday in October. Russia spans 11 time zones, but Moscow is the only direct dial city listed in this stack. Russia observes Advanced Time as does most of Europe. Though CHINA spans five time zones, it has decreed that the entire country be calculated at minus eight (–8) hours Greenwich Mean Time Zone and observes Advanced Time from April 12 to September 12. JAPAN does not observe Advanced Time. Areas of the UNITED STATES that do NOT observe Advanced Time are: Arizona, Hawaii, Puerto Rico (Caribbean area), the Virgin Islands, American Samoa, and the major portion of Indiana. These deviations have been programmed into the “Finder” as accurately as possible. However, some very small areas in Kansas, Texas, Florida, Michigan and Alaska do not make the change to Advanced Time and are programmed in as accurately as possible. Please check with your operator if you find discrepancies in these areas. Argentina, Uruguay and portions of Chile change to Advanced Time in our WINTER months but this is not calculated into this stack. Check with your International Operator for “Time THERE” for any country in the Southern Hemisphere from October until March. Countries near the equator tend NOT to deviate from Standard Time. Again, you may enter city names you often use that do not appear in the stack by typing them into the field along with the others in that area code. If you add international cities, remember to add the area code for that city FOLLOWING the city name.
